person performing them understands the chemical reactions that take place during that service
and has the products to counteract negative effects from color/lightener from occurring.  Also,
beware of stylists that use overly aggressive mixtures of chemicals in order to save time or
speed up your process.

When highlighting or coloring the hair,  Disulfide bonds (Disulfide bonds account for 1/3 of the
hairs strength) could be broken due to the high pH of lighteners or color being used.  Incorrect
mixing, overly-aggressive formulations or incorrect application of color or lightener could cause
the Disulfide bonds to turn from Cystine (an amino acid) into Cysteic Acid, which is what causes
hair damage/breakage.  Once Cystic acid is formed, there is no returning strength to the hair
through the Disulfide Bonds.  If enough Disulfide bonds are turned to Cysteic acid the hair will
break.

There are ways to offset damage to a chemical service regardless of whether an analine
derivative tint (color) or lightener (bleach) is used.  Zerran APS System additives do a
phenomenal job of chaining together polypeptide amino acids in the hair to prevent protein loss
as well as limit the amount of Cysteic acid formation.
I want highlights but I want to avoid damaging my hair.  Any advice?
